Favorite NYC Pilates Classes on Classpass

Classpass Pilates

Ever since transitioning to low impact workouts, I’ve explored my fair share of Pilates classes, primarily in NYC. Not only has the workout changed my body, but also the way I view fitness altogether. I used to think I needed to do an intense workout and walk out with a crazy sweat to achieve something- but you can read all about that in my linked blog post above.

I have been a ClassPass member for a while now, mostly because it’s cost efficient, allows me to keep a flexible fitness schedule and has so many options to cater to my daily mood. Needless to say, I’ve tried a fair amount of Pilates classes through the app and have narrowed down my favorites for you- but first let’s discuss the difference between a Reformer and Megaformer machine.

Reformer vs. Megaformer:

Both machines look VERY similar. The Megaformer is basically a classic reformer on steroids. Both machines are meant to challenge the body, but the Megaformer (a much larger machine with more straps, springs, cutouts, platforms & cables) also allows upper body work (like triceps & kickbacks) during your workout and allows you to challenge multiple muscles at once. The differences might seem minimal and it’s honestly about personal preference. I like to mix it up and give my body the opportunity to both have an extreme challenge with Megaformer classes but also allow it to lengthen and slow down with classic Pilates.

Here are my current go-to classes in NYC on the app:

  • Solidcore: Multiple Locations (Chelsea, Nomad, Soho), 50 minutes, 16-25 credits

    • Megaformer Machine

    • Amenities: No shower, digital lockers

    • I personally consider this to be one of the most challenging and sweaty Pilates classes. The room is dark and with blue lights and the pace is V fast. The classes usually begin with abs (unlike most classes that end with them) and the moves are small, long and come with the shakes. Jacob is my go-to instructor, but every instructor will challenge you.

  • New York Pilates: Multiple Locations (Soho, Bowery, West Village), 50 minutes, 12-25 credits

    • Reformer Machine

    • Amenities: No shower, lockers

    • The Core Cult Jump class is my go-to because I find it to be the most challenging and I’m not going to a pricey class to slack off. Arms, Abs & Ass is also a great option to tone the body and Sculpt Restore is a less challenging option for when you’re looking for a chill session. The studios are bright and white with a good amount of machines in them. Heather Anderson, the founder, teaches a few classes which are amazing- but they fill up in seconds! Xander is another fav of mine!

  • WundaBar: Soho, 45 minutes, varies 10-18 credits

    • Reformer Machine “their own Wunda Machine”

    • Amenities: No shower, no lockers (cubbies for your belongings)

    • This class is just the right amount of challenge, without a serious sweat and combines the Reformer, Wunda Chair, Ballet Bar and Jump Board into one workout. Cate is fantastic, however I haven’t had a bad instructor at this studio.

  • Just Like Om: Chelsea, 60 minutes, ~12 credits

    • Reformer Machine

    • Amenities: No shower, no lockers (cubbies for your belongings)

    • I’ve been keeping this studio is my little secret. Its small (only 6 reformers and 1 studio) and v cozy. The classes are very lengthening and the sweat level is 3/10.

  • BodyRok: Flatiron & Union Sq., 40 minutes, 10-16 credits

    • Megaformer Machine

    • Amenities: No shower, no lockers (cubbies for your belongings)

    • In only 40 minutes (unheard of in NYC), you get a fast-paced and v intense workout with a sweat level of 5/10. I like that the lights switch from blue to pink when the class is almost over, so you have an idea of timing. Zach B is my go-to instructor!

  • Flex Studios: Union Square & Noho, 55 minutes, 11-24 credits

    • Reformer & Infrared Mat Pilates

    • Amenities: Shower available in Noho (not Union Sq.) & digital lockers

    • Another reformer class that gives you the shakes (grippy socks required!) and the Infrared sessions are incredible for when you’re looking for a great sweat. The Infrared mat sessions are done on a mat in a heated room and use equipment such as a Pilates ring and light weights.

  • BK Pilates: Flatiron, 60 minutes, 7-16 credits

    • Reformer Machine

    • Amenities: No shower, digital lockers

    • This studio is very instructor specific - I personally like Intense Pilates with Angeline or Reformer All Levels with Marina’s - but when the class is good it’s good. TBH I’ve had a few unpleasant experiences via the front desk girls, but the workout is worth coming back to.

  • SLT: Multiple Locations (Flatiron, W14, SoHo, Tribeca) 50 minutes, 16-23 credits

    • Megaformer Machine

    • Amenities: No shower, digital lockers

    • New to CP, but not to the Pilates scene, this is another V challenging Megaformer workout. TBH, it’s not the most fun, but it’s definitely a challenge, which keeps me coming back. FYI, grippy socks are required!
